A stronger move: take Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th April (2 leave days) and you're back on Thursday 9th, having had six consecutive days off. Combined with a reasonable drive or short flight, that's enough time for a proper trip to Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, or a budget continental break.
Note for Scotland: Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland. Scottish workers have Good Friday and then a normal working Monday. Anyone wanting to match the English four-day break needs to book Easter Monday as annual leave.
Early May Bank Holiday: A Standalone Monday
The Early May Bank Holiday falls on Monday 4th May β the first Monday of the month. That's a standard three-day weekend: Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd, Monday 4th.
It's not a brilliant bridge opportunity in isolation. There's no adjacent bank holiday to compound it with, and the days around it β Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th β are ordinary working days. Taking Tuesday 5th as leave gives you four days off (SatβTue), which is decent but nothing spectacular.
The value of the May Day bank holiday in 2026 is more contextual. If you've got a half-term trip planned for late May (the Spring Bank Holiday weekend), the Early May bank holiday provides a natural separate break five weeks earlier. Summer Bank Holiday: Turning August Into September
The Summer Bank Holiday is the last Monday of August β 31st August in 2026. Three days off automatically: Saturday 29th, Sunday 30th, Monday 31st.
The extension logic here is slightly different from the spring dates. By late August, most people have already taken their main summer holiday. The bank holiday weekend is more likely to be used for a UK staycation, a festival, or a family day out than an international trip.

Scotland: Different Calendar, Different Opportunities
Scottish workers operate under a slightly different set of bank holidays, which changes some of the calculations above.
2nd January is a Scottish bank holiday. That means the New Year's break is automatically four days (1stβ4th January) without any leave β the same as what English workers get by burning one leave day.
Easter Monday is not a Scottish bank holiday. Scottish workers wanting a four-day Easter break need to book 6th April as annual leave.
St Andrew's Day (30th November) is a Scottish bank holiday. In 2026, 30th November is a Monday β which means a three-day weekend at the end of November is built in. Taking Tuesday 1st December as leave gives four days off heading into December.
